Hello Everyone!
I've been going to this website for over a year and finally decided to become an actual member. I appreciate this site and know my questions will be answered when I visit.
I moved to my home on an acre of land in 2013 and discovered my next door neighbors had a chicken farm. A few years ago I made a friend with a beautiful red hen that I named GG, short for Ginger. She would be here everyday and eventually started a nest in my shop bathroom. Nothing came of her 28 eggs but she stayed. Over the last couple of years, hens would start their life here with me by sleeping in a baby pine out front. Last year I even had a rooster start spending the night. My neighbors aren't the best chicken owners and I feel bad for their chickens. The chickens that stayed here now have a penned in area with a net roof and a wood hen house. I have 7 hens(not sure what breeds they are)and 2 roosters(separated).
I'm out with my chickens every morning to feed and water them. My neighbors don't mind that I've adopted 9 of their wayward chickens and there are 3 more chickens that come over to get their portion of pellets in the morning. One is a red mini rooster(so adorable) and 2 are black/brownish hens. If they start sleeping in my baby pine at night, I'll get them into a safe area, either where the hen house is or where one of my roosters is. The mini rooster will have to have his own area built as I know roosters don't get along to well when there are hens involved.
Last week I noticed all of my chickens up and out by 4 am. Before this they stayed inside until after 7am. I checked for holes predators might use but there aren't any. I checked inside the hen house, nothing there either. This coincides with the hens starting to lay eggs again. Is this something anyone else is experiencing? Is it because they all have insomnia, lol? My rooster that is in his own area was out at 1am this morning.
I love this website and will definitely be here more often now That I'm a member.
Thank you everyone! I look forward to any advice, suggestions or chats.
