My rooster was killed and now the hens do not live in the coop but on my porch at nite and side of the house at day...help

Hi, Mary and welcome to BYC - sorry about the loss of your rooster. Was your rooster attacked in the coop? If so, then it would be a good idea to try and make it more secure. When a flock witnesses the loss of a fellow flock mate to a predator, they can be traumatised for some time afterwards. If the roo was not killed in the coop, and its secure, then I would suggest putting your girls in the coop and keeping them there for a couple of days (with food and water) to try and encourage them to consider it "home" once more. Repeat the lockdown as necessary.

Good luck

I agree with CTKen in that they are probably traumatised.

I hope you enjoy BYC. There are lots of friendly and very helpful folks here so not only is it overflowing with useful information it is also a great place to make friends and have some fun. Unlike non chicken loving friends, family and colleagues, BYC’ers never tire of stories or pictures that feature our feathered and non feathered friends

Sorry for the loss of your rooster. I agree with the previous greeters, secure your coop and keep the hens in there at night...they'll be safer inside than outside.

Good luck to you and if you need more help, just ask.

Nice to meet you Mary, sorry you lost your roo. After your girls feel secure again, you may find one will come forward and take over for the rooster.

Hi there, and welcome to Backyard Chickens! I am quite sure you will just love it here, so pull up a chair and make yourself at home here! Welcome to the family! :frow
