Maryland Poultry Swap & Farmer's Market **UPDATED w/ PICS pg.43**

Sadly, I can not make this event and i really need help with something...

I was hoping local MD people on here might be able to help me.

I have a small flock. My main flock consist of my rir roo, and 3 br ladies...i had more hens but had a fox problem, only recently fixed. The other chickens that i own are all 2 months old chicks and 90% of them are males.

Because of the stortage of hens now, my roo has been tearing up these BR ladys. I need to find at least 2 laying age hens- any breed but standard size, and used to being handled by people. Willing to pay up to $8 per bird and drive for pick up. Please PM me.

--> i already tried posting in the MD section on the website but nobody ever responded.

--> I also have tried looking all over craigslist for the past 3 weeks and all i can find are ads for chicks...i need bigger hens to take some of the pressure off of my 3 ladys (they were wearing wing protectors as was and still have no feathers left on their backs).

Take your roo out of the pen or pen him up separate. They only need to see him for a second a couple times a week for your eggs to be fertile. Why stress out your ladies. He can deal with confinement till they heal. I do it all the time when I have groups in breeding pens. Darn roos.

Erin, I have questions. If I understand what I read on the first page, birds can be tested there at the swap and won't have to be done beforehand. Correct? Also what about birds under 3 mo. old? Are they required to be tested? Space (for vendors (us) selling birds, etc) is $8.00. How soon does the space have to be spoken for and who receives the money to reserve the space? Thank you.

Sande

Hey Sande, I would LOVE for you to make it.

We were originally planning to do onsite testing the day of the event ... BUT
roll.png
the state doesn't think that would be sufficient as ALL vendors will need to be AI negative including in staters... so, what we're planning to do .. I know this is a hassle but, we're trying to make it as easy as possible.. is offer a testing clinic approximately 10 days prior to event (date still TBD) and everyone (in staters and out of staters) are welcome to attend. It'll be a free service and we will have your green card waiting for you to pick up morning of event. Any negatives will be discretely notified. One more thing to make it easier, only breeding stock must be tested. All chicks and juveniles under 6 months do not need to be tested. If you bought your chicks or juvies from a hatchery or from an NPIP breeder, Im pretty sure you can just get a faxed/emailed copy of their green card and you'll be fine.

As for vendor space, there is 10 acres so space isn't a problem. We'll be setting up similar to how we do at TSC... Parking isles will be wide and you can park as close or as far away from the car next to you to allow more space for yourself. Pull up and set up behind your vehicle. Once you're set up and selling, myself or my husband will come by and collect for the event. Helpers will have orange "staff" t-shirts so you'll recognize us easily. I wish I could offer this all for free but between the cost of the moon bounce, porto potties and advertising, I may just break even with the $8 fee. so.. vendor fees go to me but, the proceeds of the Show Clinic which is $2 per bird entered all go to support the Maryland Poultry Fanciers Association. I will donate a portion of any extra I take in to the poultry club as well as Will Morrow of Whitmore Farms is a member there and is assisting us with the testig clinic and his good friend, Paul Gilroy, (also a member) will be donating his time assisting with the Show Clinic. Their interest in this is purely for the fancy. They are trying to recruit more showman and women and, we think, making this as easy as possible will encourage others to participate and have fun.

All vendors are greatly encouraged to enter at least 2 birds in the show. ..even if they are not in show condition..we would love to see the support and have a nice display of different breeds in the cages. Also, if you could bring your bird in its show cage (small dog crate or wire cage.. so that it's easy to open to examine your bird and easy to see the bird) we would greatly appreciate it. We have a total of app. 15 cages so far and we're hoping for more but,.... just in case we can't scrape them together in time, this would be a HUGE help.

Hannah, I got your mother's message. THANK YOU

Erin,

Thank you very much for the reply. I plan on attending the swap. Any birds I would be bringing will be youngsters from various sources, ie. TSC, hatched eggs, etc. All birds will be under 6 months, so no testing should be necessary if I understand correctly. I certainly want to go by the book so not to cause a problem for anyone. The swap already sounds like a winner.

Erin, Even though I am new to the "all things chicken" world I am not short on enthusiasm. I will definately be there. I do preserves/jellies/breads is there any interest in me selling them at the show? I would also be willing to donate some of my items for the door prizes/gift bags. Looking forward to the show. Fran

Fran, that sounds wonderful! ...especially since we are no longer permitted to give away live animals

It seems even goldfish at the carnival must be given away with proper care and handling instructions as well as be approved by the state

The red tape is getting a tad bit wild but, I understand. If one of the non animal vendors won a pair of turkeys.. they may not have a place for them to go, etc.

But, everyone can use canned good. ..maybe we can make a little basket of stuff that we can all donate a few things for. ... maybe we can do a canned food with some herb plants and some nice kitchen towels hmm... and maybe a gardening one?? hmm

OK. Im off to Walkersville, Damascus, Mt. Airy, Lisbon, Myersville and Sykesville... leaving no feed store or hardware store without our beautiful flyer.

Kathleen, I would love for you to hit Taneytown, Westminster,Emmitsburg and Unionbridge some time this week.

Hannah, if you could get Chambersburg, Greencastle and points near there

Tammy, Berkeley Springs and Hedgesville

We'll also need someone for the Winchester, Leesburg, No. VA area

I already hit all the little towns around me and Frederick, Smithsburg, Jefferson and Charles Town.

I have not hit Tractor Supply in Hagerstown or Martinsburg. Please print this out and take it to your local feed store. The more... the merrier

You can print in "fast draft" mode to conserve ink and print on regular paper OR print regular mode on any quality photo paper for a beautiful finish

We have a month to go! so, it's critical time now to get the word out and give folks enough time to hatch and get prepared.
