Does anybody else feed wet mash? I get laying pellets and put them in a pie pan, and put warm or cold water (depending on the weather) and stir it around and let the water soak in the pellets and then I put greens in there cat food or what ever I have avalible, and they gobble it up like mad! Does anyone else do this??? Is it good for my chickens? I am mixed up .... is MASH crumbled up pettets????? I call my stuff mash well because it IS mash!

Yes, I feed that to my girls, and they LOVE it. They are a little spoiled, and gobble this up in the cold weather when I make it with really warm water. They think it's a special treat, and it's just their feed in a different form

sometimes I add fresh blueberries, sometimes flax seeds, any number of good things for them.

Yes, I've gotten the layer crumbles and it makes the mash REALLY GOOD! You have to add ALOT of water for all of the crumbles to get soaked good! My chickens like the layer crumble mash better then the pellet mash! The layer crumbles make a softer mash then the pellets do! My chickens thing it's CAKE!??? They just LOVE it! LOL Yes, you can add just about ANYTHING to it!

Mash is great. In my opinion feeding mash along with whole or freshly cracked grains is the old way that worked since man domesticated chickens. Commercially formulated bags of feed have only been around a relatively short amount of time;)

Personally, I am trying to relearn what we have forgotten since the boom of "factory food" after WWII.

When attempting a whole grain diet, mash is a great way to get your chickens what they are missing, and use up excess fruits and vegetables.

For me things like apples, pumpkins and winter squash are great bases for mash. They are abundant in fall and store well all winter.

I will cook and mash the fruit or squash, to that I add what ever you feel they need. My current experimental "Protein boost" mash is two quarts alfalfa meal, two quarts organic soy meal, 1 quart fish meal, 1 cup black jack molasses's, 3 T Azomite. (28% protein)

I will add a cup or so of this mix to the mashed up fruit or squash. Serve this once a day.

A pro-biotic mash with yogurt as a base is another great mash.

I too would be interested in seeing some more idea's and recipes.

(For the record my birds still have free choice organic commercial feed available at all times, at least until I can understand chicken nutrition well enough to eliminate it!)

I am thinking I will plant a large amount of pumpkins or winter squash to use as a base for making mash. (That along with an apple base.) Sure wished I had a goat or a cow to make yogurt that would be a great thing in mash too..

That would be REALLY good for them I think! We have a milk cow, and we make cheese, and stuff and I give the way to the chickens! They can just drink it, I bet it would be pretty good in mash ,too! I wonder if it's good for them? My chickens like veggies that come out of the garden that are all soft and mushy! I add lots of different stuff to my mash, it just depends on what I have on hand, at the moment!
