Mask to quick birds for DNA?

We need to quick the birds in order to get blood for the DNA tests. My husband thinks we should wear a mask so they don't associate pain with us. What do you guys think? Do chickens remember things like that?

Also, would you recommend cutting the 5th toe? Since they don't really walk on it?

What do you mean "quick"? And do you mean removing a toe? As far as remembering, I'm not certain how much pain you're talking about. If you have to pick up and handle a chicken, they aren't usually too appreciative, unless you've taught them to enjoy being held.

Why would you cit the 5th toe off? They don't use it, but it's a breed trait and that would only cause unnecessary pain

Also if you mean drawing a spot of blood, I wouldn't worry about hiding your face.

I think they mean cutting lightly into that nerve of blood that is usually in the nail to get a few drops of blood

Sexing. We have silkies, so sexing is hard. We are not allowed males. I don't want to get attached and then have to rehome the boys.
