My Buff Orp, Betty, has a mass on the side of her beak. The pic of her straight on and the lightest one from the side (although in that pic it looks smaller than it really was) is about 5 weeks ago. The one that is the closest was in the last few days on the roost. It has definitely got larger in the last month. She is still walking around fine (doesn’t seem weak) and eating. She will be 7 years old in the spring. Her crop isn’t necessarily full at night but is still decent size. She doesn’t really get excited about the nightly treat of black oil sunflower seeds like normal but still partakes some nights. She seems to be taking care of herself. The mass is hard. She doesn’t seem to be scratching at it but I did notice her shaking her head some tonight on the roost. Anyone have suggestions on what to do? Guessing it’s probably a tumor? I’m thinking about letting it go since she seems ok (maybe not completely normal) but if it keeps getting bigger then I’m sure it will be an issue. I’ve debated cutting it open but if it is a tumor then I‘m sure I can’t get it out by myself and there are no vets in my area that deal with poultry. I’m guessing my only option is to put her down when her health takes a turn. Any helpful comments or suggestions would be appreciated. Thank you for reading my post.

That is in a place where canker can occur, but cancer can also be a possibility. Have you looked inside the beak with a light? Is there any yellow material, or a bad odor? If it is a tumor, I would wonder about it being a melanoma. It may not be possible to diagnose this until a necropsy can be performed if you lose her. Let us know what you see inside the beak.

I have not looked inside. I will ASAP. Thank you.
