Massachusetts Trip

Actually, Back Bay and downtown are safe for anyone. The only crime in Boston is the cost of parking!

My favorite outside Boston destination is Plimoth Plantation which has chickens, by the way....if you stay want to do things within the city Harvard University has many great museums with low ticket fees.

Harvard's Glass Flowers Exhibit is world famous!

Phyllis

there were shootings there and everything!.

..maybe i am naming the wrong location or something?...but the place i am talking about..is indeed scary at night...

...but..its a city..like any city...its everywhere...

Maybe you're thinking of Dorchester?

Parts of Dorchester used to be OK, but it's really gone downhill over the past 5 or so years. Anyway, there's nothing in Dorchester to see really, it's easy to avoid.

my dad was a cab driver in Dorchester when he was just out of the Navy. WAY BACK!

I dont think Dorchester was EVER a "good" part of the city to be in.

Really though. Most of the fun stuff to do in Boston is better done during the warmer months. All the shopping is great. But NOT cheap.
Boston is a "walking city" IMHO.
Massachusetts is great for sight seeing, depending on how long you are going to be here to take things in. But again. Most fun and cool things are outdoors and better left to the spring, summer and early to mid fall.

PM me we lived there for 25 years! Fanueil Hall for sure- Go to Yankee Magazine and they won't do you wrong with their suggestions!

Don't worry about crime as long as you're cautious and not naive. Aquarium is great, Museum of Science is pretty cool too. You must eat in Chinatown!!! The Hong Kong Eatery is super-- but so is everyplace there. ( this is an area where you should be particularly cautious, however-- go during the day if you can---but don't drive-- take the subway-- you'll never be able to park there).

Are you actually staying IN Boston, or near it?? PM me if you want more ideas!

I am actually visiting a dear friend of mine in Boston at the end of the month. I will be driving in, I just remember to signal AFTER I change lanes and I fit right in. I know you have to drive fast and be on guard because some of the worst drivers outside of Jersey live there.

Sorry, needed to rib a few of my Jersey friends there. She actually has me meeting her after work when we will take my DS to the Children's Museum. She seems to think it will be no prob.
I was in Salem for Halloween and had a blast. If you like history, especially about the birth of our country, you'll love the area. Lots to do, if you don't mind getting cold and travelling around a bit outside of the city.
If you remember the series "Cheers" you can visit the tavern it was fashioned after named the Bull and Finch, if it is still there. It is not like the set, smaller than the one on Cheers, but the outside is what you see in the opening credits. Did I just date myself?
The only thing that I can say is disturbing about Boston is the Sox and their fans.

She actually lives near Boston she and her husband got a house out of the city when they decided to start a family (I just don't remember where it is

)

Wow I was worried that I would be bored and spend all of my time worrying about my animals That doesnt seem to be the case anymore! At least I have a list of People to PM before we leave so I can have some sort of game plan....Thanks to everyone for their suggestions!

Garden Girl: Lol on the driving believe me I'm from Florida and completely understand awful senseless driving .
I was terrified of driving when snow bird season came around and I had just gotten my liscence .

My favorite is the "Oh I need to turn there! (cuts over three lanes of traffic and hits the brakes) oh no maybe not. I'll just drive 10 MPH until I find the right turn."

Roxbury, JP, Roslindale are the don't go to spots.
Some places in Dorchester and Southie aren't bad.

The Harvard Museum of Natural History is AWESOME! I've been on two field trips there with my DS and one that I took him myself.

I can't believe I forgot the MOS.
www.mos.org I think is the link.

Chinatown is great for Chinese, Duh
The North End is the best Italian.

Way back in the dark ages, Nantasket Beach woulda been something to go to or Revere Beach. sigh

You could also take a trip on the new Commuter Rail. It goes from South Station all the way down to Middleboro.

We had one of those driving in front of us today, Nikki. She stops at a green light. floors it up to the next red light. goes slow on the straightway on Storrow Drive, then decides that she needs to get off at THAT exit and tries to cut us off. Stops dead when she can't go through us, cuts off the guy behind us and forces the guy that was next to HIM to get off at that exit too...oy vey!
