Hi. I've got a 1-year old Barnevelder lady with a very swollen eye. It showed up quickly, along with oozing and some nasal discharge. We watched it for 2 days, and when it got worse, we started penicillin injections. Today is day 5 of injections, and it's still looking the same as when we started. She is eating/drinking/pooping OK, and we have her isolated in a kennel in the basement.

Any ideas? Anything we can try? Anyone seen anything like this?

Thanks in advance,
Angela

It looks like the swelling of mycoplasma G. or coryza which are chronic respiratory diseases. Tylan 50 injections for 3-5 days would treat the symptoms, but neither disease is cured with any drug. All flock members will become carriers, so she needs to be isolated. Does she have a foul odor around her head, which would indicate coryza? Here is a link about these and other respiratory diseases: http://edis.ifas.ufl.edu/ps044

Well...I've done a lot of research and am wondering if it's coryza. She did smell funny earlier, but since quarantine and antibiotics, that's gone away. The eye and nose are draining a clear to yellowish liquid, and the swelling hasn't gone down at all.

I will look in her mouth as soon as my daughter gets up to see if there's anything (pus, impacted food) in there, but my guess is still coryza. Is there any way to know for certain that is it without a necropsy?

And, if it IS, what then? This is my daughter's 4-H/show flock. Even if I do manage to "heal" this one, chances are it won't be show-worthy, and I wouldn't bring a known carrier of an infectious disease to a show anyway. So far the rest of the ladies look OK, and it's been about 8 days since we noticed the swelling on this one. How long do we wait for symptoms in the rest of the flock, and how do I know if they're exposed too?

This stinks!
