Mat that chickens wont eat

I want to put down a small cover or rug over some hardware cloth....to make it less slippery in winter and less hazard for their feet. Any idea what material it could be. I don't want them to pick it and eat it. And hope it could be fairly easy to clean.

About 6 x 4 foot area of welded wire skirt that is laid on the ground between the coop and run, so they have to cross it often.

Can you bury it?

Burying it would be my choice, or even laying some concrete pavers on top if it's a spot they'd want to actively dig through anything you bury it with. If I was choosing a mat I'd use rubber stall mat
