Pine shavings in an open run?

My run is only half covered. Our soil is sandy but there's a layer of topsoil over it so I'm looking to add some kind of litter for the summers just to deep-litter the poop and keep everyone's feet clean. In the winter the whole thing will be covered so it will be less of an issue.

I don't want sand because getting a load of sand to the location of my coop will be too much of a nightmare, and bagged sand too expensive. I'm hesitant to do mulch/woodchips because I don't want to bring in pesticides or invasive plant species (bad experience last year with a load of topsoil, ugh). Chipdrop has been on my mind but I don't love that I won't know what I'm getting.

So what I'm considering is kiln dried pine flakes, like the stuff people use inside the coop. But will it hold up to rain? Or will it get moldy or slippery or be something I regret?

I think shavings will deteriorate rapidly. I used untreated wood chips intended as mulch. I got them at the feed store and they took quite a while to break down.
