material for a chicken run...

I have a 100 sq.foot chicken run that is only used during the winter, except for the month or so I am raising meaties. As you can imagine it gets muddy and it is now mud season.

Would it be acceptable to use natural hardwood mulch in order to keep the mud at bay?

Wouldn't hurt, but I've heard that 4" or so of sand is better, drains well and you can easily rake the poo out. I've got a muddy run I need to address too.
