Material for duck run?

We have a new 150 sqft duck run and new to this. We put down pea gravel and sand over top aka Storey, but he suggests cedar chips for on top of the sand? Would wood chips work? Or Hay? Straw?

Any suggestions would be great!

sand is fine, you dont need anything over it, just keep it clean by churning it everyother day and then add new sand every once and a while!!
