mating after returning?

I've noticed that when the hens get out and I put them back over the fence there is a particular rooster always waiting for them. The second the hit the ground he jumps on top and mated them? What is this - some kind of sadistic punishment for leaving the flock? (My hens aren't reall 'agreeable' to being mated)

Any thoughts on why he does this? FYI - he is one of my more protective roos and seems to be taking over the dominant spot (I've got 3).

She's probably a favorite of your rooster.

When you put her back in, the rooster has probably been waiting to mate her for a while, and finally has his chance. I wouldn't worry about it, it should be normal.

I'd think so, except that it doesn't matter which one's been out. He goes after any hen that's been over the fence.
