Mating practices (I have to ask!)

And to think I was completely embarrassed for starting this thread

When I got my first duck last summer (he was rescue) we thought it was a girl. I didn't know about voice sexing. I knew NOTHING about ducks. We got another duck to keep "her" company and I must have walked out to check on them right after the deed because I saw what I thought was a worm dangling out of the butt. I got concerned but I noticed the worm got sucked up inside her. I thought, "Oh great, how am I going to pull that worm out?" I did some research on types of worms in ducks and stumbled upon a picture of a drake's anatomy. WOW. Glad I didn't try to pull the "worm" out!

Oh, and our five year old daughter saw the ducks mating and said, "Oh are they playing duck duck goose?" Yep. They sure are sweetie :)

I'm always watching to make sure that corkscrew worm always goes back where it's suppose to. Same with after egg laying always squatting down to make sure nothings hanging out that shouldn't. Only on BYC.

Now THAT is something I have yet to see....egg laying. I would LOVE to see my duck actually lay an egg, but I don't know how I would do that. She goes inside her ducky house, makes a bed from hay and lays (very early in the morning as I let them out at 6:30 in the morning and the egg is there, nice and warm.) I have no idea what I would do if a corkscrew got "stuck." I know I would NOT pull it out

In an emergency, sometimes we have to do things we never would have imagined.

But I really, deeply, truly do not ever want to have to help Bean with that.

Really.

I would totally tuck Nibby's dongle in if he needed help... he's my sweetie. Nemo, not so much!

So I read something today about the drakes growing a new phallus every mating season... is that actually true? The article stated that it withered away after the season and grew back, and that the size often depended on how much male competition there was. Ca c'est vrai?

Ce n'est pas vrai. At least, I hope not.

I can see hormones making a difference, maybe. Bird digestive systems - at least in some birds - changes according to the season allowing them to better digest either starchy foods or more high-protein foods, so I suppose the phallus could change in size according to hormones. But perhaps I misunderstand withered away. My first thought was you meant disappeared.

Now, Amiga, do you check each drake at the end of mating season?

I just sidled left to do some research. Found a well-supported reference plus lots of plagiaries of the original.. Forgot to copy the URL of course and closed that window. Doh!

Wow. Maybe that's why a drake of mine wasn't anywhere as concerned about his prolapse as I was? Draggin' it in the dirt.... I was steeling myself to "deal" with it on day three, but he wasn't dragging anything that day. Hmmm.
