I have a 5 month old chicken. Hasn't started crowing but appears to be a rooster. Isolated from other chickens and is lowest on the pecking order. This week frostbite (her name) has started mounting the food dish and trying to inseminate it. I don't know if she is a hen or rooster because this behavior is not present with other chickens and not sure if this is normal. Any help?

That happens sometimes, with isolated/rejected roosters. I had a cochin-leghorn cockerel that would breed a volleyball. He became especially fond of it once it developed a slow leak and did not stay so round once he got on it... It's not common but happens.

I've heard of ganders(male geese) that were raised alone in a brooder and later on they had strong romantic attractions to a large object that was in the brooder- such as a red feeder or.....
