Mating....

How old are chickens when they start mating? Our are 15 weeks old, noticed 1 of the buff orpingtons rooster the other night tried to mate one of the hens... then our little bantam tried to with one of the Buffs last night, now that was funny... hes so little and shes so big!

They can sometimes start practicing when they are a couple of months old but they probably won't do any good until they are at least 16 weeks and more likely 20 or more. As with most other chicken behaviors, it varies by breed and individual.
