I have silkie chick that is only about 1 week old and I noticed yesterday that where it’s wing meets it’s body was damp looking. Figured maybe it got into the water some how. At the end of the day, the feathers were still matted and damp. No other chicks picking on it and she is eating and drinking fine. This morning I found her eye was matted shut and feathers around her eye are damp. Any thoughts on what is causing this?

I had a buff orpington and now a salmon faverolle with the same problem. I asked before and nobody knew. The orpington was not effected. When she grew up, the eye was still the same, but this time it was bubbly. The salmon is acting like the orpington did, normal and not effected. I would watch to make sure there is not something actually wrong. These chicks came from a hatchery so things like this are normal.

Welcome to BYC@katiejojohnson. What is the chick’s history, where is it from, are there other hatchmates? I would wonder if the chick has been pecked in the eye, or if it has a possible respiratory infection that is making the eye watery. Do you see any bubbles or foam in the eye?

We have the same issue with our Silkie, another Silkie of same batch & age & set up is doing fine. The Silkie had her eye shut for one day now it’s open but the fur around the eye is still matted.

You can clean the eye with saline eye wash, then apply a dab of either Terramycin eye ointment or plain Neosporin ointment twice a day. Pecks around the eye, and a respiratory disease MG are possible causes. Here is a good link about MG:
