I am new to birds. We bought a small farm last June that came with a Peacock and a Rooster, they got along fine. I wanted to add some ladies to the small bird family. Last October I bought two Black Shoulder Peahens they were hatched last summer, I also bought 7 Cochin hens 4 white 3 brown for my rooster, I separated the Peafowl so I could confine the girls with my Peacock for a few months as I allow them to free range. I introduced both flocks in January, they have all done well together, until this week, the Peacock is trying to mate with my white cochins, he injured one yesterday, found her with a lot of feathers pecked out, and her head was covered with dried blood, he had injured her cone, did not find any other open area on her. I have separated the peafowl from the chickens. My question is he trying to mate with my hens because the peahens are not mature? when the peahens mature, will the peacock leave my hens alone? I have been reading that most peahens are mature at about 2 years of age, so hopefully next summer my girls will be mature and able to accept his advances, or should I consider trying to find a mature female this year?
Any help would be Greatly appreciated!
