Kathryn final made it here. Finally got to see a hatch! Her favorite part was watching the beak going in and out while it was zipping.

I think that would be my favorite part, too! How many are still left to go? Love seeing all the floof in there!

Day 8: My broody Elenore is doing a great job so far. She is sitting on 8 silkie eggs (she is a barnyard mix that looks a bit like a Columbian Rock) and all but one are growing well. One looked like it had a blood ring, but there was still movement - I'll keep my eye on that one. This is my first time with a broody hen so I was surprised to see her come out for about an hour yesterday. She walks around all puffed up and squawky, but she had a dust bath and some food and water. I also have a duck that has been hoarding eggs, but I hope I can break her! I am quickly running out of room.

#7 looks like a dud. I’ll still leave it in for a few more days to be sure unless it starts to stink. The hen refuses to drink water and I’ve had to start using a syringe to get any down her. She did eat some eggs and mash this morning though.

Love everyone’s chicks! Day 20 here and it’s nail biting time I still need to clean the coops and finish cleaning the shed, but I managed to get a brooder set up for the incubator chicks. Hopefully they won’t be in there long before they go to the hens but you never know what will happen with broodies. Last year I had a couple of broodies that started killing the chicks so I had to take them away.
Hopefully these moms will do a better job than the ones I had last year! Anyway, I am looking forward to some chicks tomorrow!

Last year I had a couple of broodies that started killing the chicks so I had to take them away.

SO CLOSE!!!!!!!!!!!! Mine are due to hatch on Tue and I will say the last 2 days have already been so LONG! and I still have 3 to go! don't think I can take it! LOL

So my broody Cochins that snuck eggs got their first baby last night! I had sort of forgotten that my hen Elinor is lavender laced, so when I saw a lavender baby I was SO confused haha. I have two lavender roosters but all my other hens are BBS or mauve splash, so I figured I’d get a bunch of black and blue chicks! Elinor is this quiet and unassuming hen and I didn’t recall seeing her eggs in the nest! I am just in love with the baby already, it’s sooo soft and adorable!!

So cute!!!!!!! I have 3 BBS cochin eggs I am waiting to hatch. Can't wait to see what colors I get! I want a Splash pullet! If I don't get any from these 3 I will just have to try again! LOL

unless you have a way to watch her 24/7 she is probably getting off the box and you are just missing it. Mine was off at just before 6am this morning and back on about 10 min later. Other times she is off for 30 min in hte middle of the day. She will skip a day here and there that she doesn't get off at all. I am just basically letting her do her thing but I also have a camera in the coop that I can see what she is doing at any minute that I want. Most broodies will do what they need to do with getting off the nest, eating drinking. They aren't going to want to poo on their eggs so they will get off for that.
