Yes, I agree... Some of 'em look a great deal alike!
This batch of Cochins is now complete. The final count is 12 chicks out of a total of 20 eggs, but only 14 had made it to lockdown. I decided to help the last chick finish hatching because I was afraid that it might have been having trouble because I had opened the 'bator to remove the hatched chicks a couple of times. I had to go out for a bit, and was afraid to leave it unhatched, in case it was actually trapped in its shell. (If I had stayed home, I might have opted to wait and keep checking for chirping sounds and movement.)
I went slowly and checked closely for signs of blood or yolk. It seemed completely ready and hatched out with no problems once I helped it along. The remaining two eggs seemed lifeless so I candled them again, and then carefully pipped them myself so I could peek inside. As I suspected, both of them were dead. I had been worried about those two when I candled before lockdown; but kept them because they looked dark and filled enough. At the time, I remember wondering if they were still viable. I think now that they were already dead, since the chicks hadn't even finished absorbing their yolks and seemed too small for full-term chicks. They were fully formed and close to the end, though. I couldn't find any reason why they died without hatching, however. Oh well... sometimes I guess it just happens with no obvious cause.
This was the best and easiest hatch I've ever had; and I am totally in love with my new
Brinsea Octagon 20!
I have more eggs that are due to hatch on May 13th, btw... I'll have to let you know how I like my new Brower Top Hatch incubator after that batch finishes.
