Sorry about the yucky pic. For those who saw it. Should I take him out or do you think that will heal. He is up and walking around, but I wonder if he will last.

They "yellow puss" is probably yolk that was not absorbed. Sorry you are losing them after they hatch.

For me the fourth time was the charm. My first hatch I only got 5 chicks out of 48. Second hatch I only got six. Third I got a miserable 3 had to help one that I then had to cull. This was out of 90 eggs. It takes time and a good incubator to get a good hatch.

I'm taking a guess that the humidity is higher & that would make it tougher for the belly cord to dry & tear or break off when ready. When the eggs hatch & the moist contents are exposed, the humidity often goes up even more.

Hatching is both fun & stressful. They don't all always make it. Remember to take notes of how you incubated & things that happened with temps, humidity, vents & chicks. You will learn a lot from it, eventually it will become much easier.

Congrats on the chicks hatching, have fun with those when they go to the brooder; they're always so adorable. I like when they come to my voice or when they think I'm going to feed them. Happy hatching!

Thanks. I was so scared to lose one, but it really wasn't that hard emotionally like I thought it would be. Maybe because I have you guys. It was sad, but I'm OK. Still have a lot more chicks hatching, so

I'm wondering if those two were not fully developed yet after all? Maybe it had something to do with the temp going up to 102 on day 15 and staying at 102 all that day. It could have made them hatch before they were ready. Who knows, but I'm taking notes and learning. I have two more zipping...very slowly, but making progress. These were all my Ameraucaunas (the ones I lost were Ameraucaunas

*Breed abbreviations (see post #15) https://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=42774&p=1

Just
did a search & found this site for all of the abbreviations that often confuse me. Now I've got the list, bring on those abbreviations!

Thank you all for the wonderful pics of your cute chicks & thanks for telling us what breed they are. I can't have all the chicken breeds, so I live vicariously thru all of you. How fun!

Can't remember if I told everyone that only 2 of FrBCM eggs were fertile - they both hatched = 'egg-topsies on the others showed not even starters. The dozen Blue-Spangled Marans now in lockdown are due to hatch Friday

. We had a power outage Sunday
barnie.gif
. It only lasted 2 hours and I wrapped the bator and hatcher in foil insulation so maybe all will be OK. The temp only dropped 2*, came right back up as soon as the power came back on. I really can't complain as the flooding here is such that hundreds have lost their homes - everything! We are blessed! Not even water in the basement!

I have a fun mix of 18 'Barter' eggs in the incubator = traded a beautiful Porcelain d'Uccle Roo that was beginning to crow for them!

They should hatch on or around the 18th. My little flock of pullets are working hard in the garden, watching me work on their new run, which will be attached to their new Mini-Coop at some point in the [hopefully near] future. Blessings to all, Eunice

Eunice, so glad to hear that you are ok & the flooding did not harm you & yours. Congrats on your hatches & your nice little flock of pullets. Take care!

Thanks for the tips
I would have been able to move the incubator out to my car much sooner, but i'm working nights and I was asleep during the day

Hopefully I don't sleep through when they hatch I prefer to have my eyes glued to the incubator while I sit on my hands

Power outs are such a bummer! We get them once in a while, so I keep some things handy for the incubator or brooders. Here's my list: pocket warmers (squish together to start the heat), jar with lid to add warm water (heated by camping stove or wood stove, smooth rocks that are warm hold heat for a while like the warm jars of water (you can keep either of them in the incubator ahead of time if you think that a power out may happen from a storm, they will maintain some heat for a while), & blankets to cover for keeping heat in.

My hatch date is May 19th. I candled them last night and I have 23 out of 25 good eggs so far. This is my first time I have done this. So far so good. I am very excited.

I have RIR, Black Star, and a mix of others.

Since the eggs I tossed yesterday were basically scrambled from a bad USPS trip (I marked them the day I received them as questionable since the air cell was detached) but the rest are very happy and active, I'm assuming that I'm doing everything right? The temp in the still air incubator is at 101 (manufacturer suggested 100) and humidity is at 40% (dry incubating). I'm keeping my fingers crossed for a really good hatch. It's exciting to see all those little lives getting bigger.
Not sure if I posted this last time but here is where I stand. Started out with 28 eggs. Tossed 6 yesterday. And I'm about halfway through incubating.
