May hatch-a-long

So I've pulled one of the four duck eggs from the bator which had a definate blood ring. The other three are going strong. I am concerned because the eggs look different then my chicken eggs do. It appears like the ducklings are developing in half of the egg vertically and the other half is albumen or maybe a funky air sack thing happening... I really hope these ducklings hatch out okay for me. As for my second bator, I pulled 6 more from the bantam mixture that were quitters. And the third incubator its too early to tell since they are only in day 3, but if I believe the 2nd thermometer I have in there, then there was a temp spike quite high like 110F on day one, for how long I dont know... Every time I look at the bator it is holding steady for temp and all 3 thermometers agree. And it held good for 2 days before I ever set eggs in it... However, it was very very hot here Sunday, so its possible that affected the bator, but no alarms went off, but its my first time using this one. I'm hoping the thermometer reading is wrong or something bc I have expensive shipped black copper maran eggs in there. That particular thermometer reads and records humidity and temp for current, and the high and the low. Its digital... and its just usually used as a backup. The old fashioned mercury type one I have in there hasn't shown it getting that high... So we will give is some time and see what happens.

Hatched my first batch! 5/9 babies hatched in my Brisnea 12 egg incubator. This is my first time using this bator also. I had a little trouble managing humidity but in the end I'm pretty happy with it. Here are my first babies!

I'm hating my flock right now, the whole lot of then but mostly my 3 guineas.

Ok so far.

The 6 hatched April 23 are doing great now 4 wks old, and still in the garage despite being off the lamp since like week 2 due to really high temps. Possibly 5 male 1 female. I'm going to say 1 male 1 female for sure the other 4 are questionable but especially 2 I'm leaning toward male.

Second hatch 8 chicks May 14th are a week old and doing great. I feel bad i haven't even taken a full picture of them yet, I do have individuals though. I'll have to get a picture of 1 in particular it looks like black on black bard? lavender roo possibly over bard hen. I don't know but if it is that would make it another male.

Broody hen 1 I gave her back all of her eggs after a failed chick introduction she down to 5 of 7 and in the mini pen due to hatch next week the 29th.

Second broody, 4 eggs set yesterday the 21st due June 11th.

My guinea hens are egg eating which only pisses me off more becuase the one keep kicking my second broody out of the nests

I cut cardboard boxes last night too make dividers for the nests, we just never got it done but the nests are 3 high about 48 inches across. It hasn't been an issue but i haven't had a broody in this coop. I was hoping giving them some space/privacy would reduce the nest sharing some. But that's how i discovered my egg eater.

So tonight i hung curtains, trying an out of sight out if mind approach. I have had a few broken eggs lately but with the nest sharing and such I hadn't though to much of it. But today I kicked a guinea. I straight up watched it pull the egg from the nest and start pecking at it. I swear I'm about to butcher all 3 of then right now...

Oh and one of the dumb chickens keeps getting trapped in my garage despite my every effort to keep her out. Today was the third time i went in there and found her. I'm starting to wonder if she decided to hide a nest in there? Or maybe she just likes watching the chicks. Either way each of the 3 times I checked before closing up and didn't see her but found her later...

I really think it's time for the hubby to start working on expanding and reinforcing my chicken run and coop so i can go back to locking them in the run till 3pm

they are so cute

Day #5
We candled our incubator eggs yesterday and 7 out of 9 look good! :clapOne I'm pretty sure has a blood ring and the other I couldn't see anything. So, good odds so far. Our 2 that are under our broody were candled as well. That's day #16 for them. You can see those little guys squirming and their little toes, lol. So cute! Impatiently waiting for this weekend.... :barnie
