Do roosters ever help incubate eggs, or "watch them?" I have an EE that has been a little broody for about 2 weeks, I have been taking her eggs from her, and she hasnt been thrilled... today I took some brown eggs, from other hens from under her. Later I went back out to collect again, and I heard an odd noise coming from the nest box, I opened it to find my rooster sitting there...on my broody hens egg. I have had chickens for over a year now, first time Ive seen this... and yes, hes definitely a rooster, lol.

one of my roosters used to sit on the eggs somtimes.

i have never let the hens hatch chicks though

I suppose it's possible for him to sit on eggs, but I refuse to belive any roo will

set on them any longer than 10 mintutes.

I was reading after starting this conversation, that sometimes roosters will guard eggs for broody hens for periods of time, and that they sometimes will go sit on them to show the girls that there is a good nest and she should make him some babies, lol... so... I think he was guarding them because my hen told him I keep taking them, she was probably like "keep that girl away from my eggs!"

I dont know about a roo sitting on eggs but last year we bought what were "SUPPOSED" to be a batch of hens.

A couple of days later a broody hatched off a cluch and then decided she was more interested in hanging with her buds.

One white hen started going bonkers trying to get to the chicks so we let her in and named her "Big Momma"

We tagged her leg so we would know that she would be a good mother.

A couple of months later we herd a unfamiliar rooster crow. A few days later "Big Momma" was doing the "Big Daddy" thing.

Ya, Big Daddy had the Big Momma tag on her/his leg.

Just goes to show, they are never a male or female till you see them crow or lay an egg.
