They cut off their egg supplier after seeing the squalid conditions of the farm. Insects, rodents, dead birds all over the place. I know it happens, but it is disturbing to see, to say the least.

Well, how can that be? They clearly advertise here in Michigan that they use "local" farmers to get their eggs from. Mhm....

Maybe it was just the supplier for that area?

However, just cuz they advertise one thing, doesn't make it not misleading... And local farmer does not mean like someone with free ranging birds.

We have some egg farms around here that you wouldn't know they were chicken farms unless someone told you. Chickens never see outside. Poor things. BUT I have never read anything bad about them, and people around here can be very nosey and create problems if things are not right.

We have a couple of old people who sit at the farmers market and ignorant people buy from them cuz they think "they're so cute" . Well one, I don't just trust an old person and two, they have an egg farm and I doubt it's free ranged or pasture fed. Bet they get more at the market than they do from their commercial buyers.

i kinda wonder if this is secretly PR damage control in response to the recent bad publicity about their pork supplier for their mcribs. seems odd that mcdonald's doesn't care that their pork is mistreated, but they'll change their egg supplier because of similar issues...

regardless of reasoning though, i AM glad to see this, hopefully they'll pick a new supplier who isn't just the same story all over again.

Why don't trust old people?

Probably because he is one!

No, seriously, people do tend to make the mistake of trusting the elderly because of the simple fact that they ARE elderly. One would do well to remember that scammers don't necessarily die young!

The more I see of commercial meat (and egg) production in general, the more I feel it hardly matters where McD's or anyplace else gets their meat. It's a grim business everywhere.

Well since they did that I say they come on BYC and say " Hi we recently cut off our egg suplier and we are willing to buy eggs from local people now. You will have to drop off to your local McDonalds and we will pay you for your eggs."

Local farmers doesn't necessarily mean the eggs come from small farms, the eggs still come from large commercial barns. Just ones in Michigan.
