Anyone ordering from a hatchery should understand that the hatchery is in it for the money. If the birds somewhat resemble the breed and lay a lot of eggs then that is what they are going to sell. If you want quality birds then you should find a reputable breeder and order from them.
I totally agree. I learned the hard way. That is why I spent a lot more time checking out the new place I mentioned who not only is helping me with my old flock that they made no money off of but also my go to from now on. I figured nothing beats something close by and although 4+ hours is a drive it is worth it to check it out. Talk via phone and face to face and pick up.

For 25 buff orpingtons it was around 80.00 plus it had shipping costs.me and my mom are doing a local hatchery and we are going to meet them at a barn store.so you can try if you have any local hatcheries that you can meet some where so you can see the chicks.

A little info on Murray McMurray. I received my chick a week ago (27 Jan 13). I ordered 47 total chicks of various breeds. I even went as far as to call my main post office hub and ask them to call me and I would pick them up whenever they got there. I received the call at 11:00pm on a Sunday. I drove the 2 hours round trip to get them faster to reduce the stress....if I had waited to get them from my local post office...who knows how many more would have died. 2 of the chicks were DOA in the box when I opened it. Later that day 3 more died. And the next day 3 more died. 1 day after that I only lost 1. Also, I ordered 4 Golden laced Wyandotte's...they didn't ship them to me. Their was a sticker on the inside of the box that said they said they ran out. Now keep in mind I ordered these chicks 3 months in advance. So there's no excuse for not sending them.

OK, now I have 3 chicks with crossed beaks and 1 with an eye problem. I will probably cull them tomorrow.

I would suggest trying to find a local hatchery around you and buy them from there. I am not happy at all with McMurray. Although their people were very nice on the phone each time I called...I believe their chicks are sub-standard. Be prepared to lose a 1/4 of them due to death or sub standard breeding.

I'm just sayin....lol

What did Murray Mcmurray do to make it right...did they refund your money, or ship out new chicks or what?

i ordered from Mcmurray and everything is fine so far. I paid for the brown egg layer and ornamental collections (15 each all suppose to be sexed pullets) and got two extra chicks that are suppose to be from their rarest of rare collection as well as 4 marked males as "extras".. all were alive, clean, and healthy even after being in transit from 3 am friday until monday morning when I received them at the post office.(i live on the other side of the country).. I still have 36 chicks and it's been over two weeks... i've only removed two turds off the chicks counting the day they arrived and they're super vibrant and healthy..(zero crossed beaks, no wing or leg problems, great stools) it's too soon to tell what they'll look like as adults but i'm more than pleased. I'll update to this thread and everyone is more than welcome to look through my pictures so far. (the ones below are one day old and 9 days old..)
