Update…a definite cockerel! So far he seems like a nice one but time will tell…

I never check the box for a free chick because most of the time it turns out to be a cockerel. What else are they going to do with the male chicks when everyone orders pullets?

I got the free surprise chick which was a gold laced Wyandotte because it would help my husband let me sell an extra pullet. I ordered extra pullets of each of the 3 breeds (buttercup, campine, gold polish) so that we could sell them which he agreed to. Once he saw them he deemed them all members of the family and the only way I was allowed to sell an extra hen is if it went with a rooster so the rooster wouldn’t be sad. So I was able to rehome 2 extra pullets this way. The mystery gold Wyandotte I’m not sure if it was a cockerel or pullet as I was able to convince DH that it’s most likely a cockerel at 3 weeks before he gets more attached. I’m planning on ordering the 6 minimum from McMurray from now on without a free chick as I won’t order extra pullets.
