MD - Wheaten/Blue Wheaten Ameracauna eggs

Well Jean ya doing good work!! all of these eggs have the same color..... nothing pale or green yet. YAY:weee

For those asking. My first line of wheatens came from a big show person in PA. They are beautiful birds... but their coloring was not true. I know that wheaten hens were used to develop the BUFF coloring. So I believe my birds are a product of some of that mixed genetics. I have sold off my hens but still have my original rooster. I will be putting him with one of my new girls to see what I get. He is a stunning boy, but you can see by this photo he does not have correct blue legs. The combs and beards I got from this line was outstanding and so was egg color.

I have some of the little mix girls they are beautiful you are right one is almost buff!

So peachick-which egg list is longer now-the Black/Blue Copper Marans or the Ameraucanas?
It sure feels good to see a frenzy over something that isnt a brown egg!!

lol Kristen. umm the copper list is pretty long, but i think it will shrink by the time my girls come out of molt.

Blue is prettier than brown anyway

FYI here is some info on the wheaten color genetics.....

Wheaten and Blue Wheaten genetics for the beginner:

If you desire to work with either the Wheaten or Blue Wheaten Ameraucana, it will be
essential for you to understand how those genes work.

Wheaten x Wheaten = All Wheaten

Wheaten x Blue Wheaten = 1/2 Wheaten and 1/2 Blue Wheaten

Blue Wheaten x Blue Wheaten = 1/2 Blue Wheaten, 1/4 Wheaten and 1/4 Splash
Wheaten.

Wheaten x Splash Wheaten = All Blue Wheaten

Blue Wheaten x Splash Wheaten = 1/2 Splash Wheaten and 1/2 Blue Wheaten

Splash Wheaten x Splash Wheaten = All Splash Wheaten

Thank you so much peachick and pips&peeps for all the genetics and background on these
eggs. I know anyone who purchases these lines will appreciate the history behind it.
Our 4H groups "Know your Breed Project" was Ameraucanas this year and while there were mostly black and blue with a few Wheatens and Blue Wheatens I bet no one could tell you how you get these colors since the chicks were bought. Now I know!!
And since DS#1 has taken to making sure folks get their facts straight on chicken breeds ...funny story...ttp://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=116927
We better back up that attitude with quality birds if he shows this breed!!!

OH! I'll tput my name on the list for some from the "not perfect" pen. My Ameracaunas are strictly for love and eggs!!

"Currie" (as in Madam Currie, short for "Curious") was our super-adventurous chick last spring, the first to go exploring, and the first to start the "Pirate Chicken" trick. (leaping to our shoulder when we went outside, where she'd happily ride for hours)

Someone asked me privately how I thought my birds compaired to Kats and I would like to answer publically.

As Kat and Jean have hinted the Wheaten/Blue Wheaten is still a work in progress. There have been some wonderful breeders along the way including Lisa Cree, Paul Smith, and others to whom we owe much. I have had birds from the top breeders in the country and they each had an issue or two to work out. I have been fortunate to have a lot of space and be able to raise many birds to pick breeders from.

I think Jean (Pips and Peeps) and Kat (Peachick) both have wonderful birds that anyone would be happy to have. They also both have a knowledge of the birds they are breeding. Strengths and weaknesses are openly discussed and improvements are being made. I feel like with folks like them working on this variety it can only enhance the reputation of Ameraucana breeders as a whole and make nicer birds for everyone to enjoy. I would (and may) buy hatching eggs from either of them with absolute confidence.

This little note is to say I appreciate you both for all the hard work you have done and hope all our birds come along really well in 2009.

Happy New Year!

Thank you so much for that!!! Huggggs and a kiss to you.

I'm a firm believer in breeding the best of the best.... otherwise we have a bunch of sub-standard mediocre animals. I am very proud of the quality of animals I raise. No animal is perfect, but we all need to have that goal to strive for..

Happy New Year everyone. I think the people on this forum are just AWESOME!!!!

I've had Ameraucanas from 4 of the big wig breeders. I've had black, blue, white, wheatens, blue wheatens and silvers. I received eggs shell samples from all the long time ABC breeders but I have to admit those are the best color I've seen.
I've had a few hens that lay a nice blue egg but haven't seen that color in the blacks and blues which all carry brown eggs genetics which unfortunately turns those blue eggs green and is almost impossible to breed out.
I've noticed more consistent blue eggshell color in silvers. I must admit after
9 years of raising Ameraucanas I've become somewhat disenchanted with them and currently only have a few silvers for fresh eggs. I've completely sold out my blacks and blues. As pretty as they are I'm quite disappointed with their egg production and consider them to be only fair layers. They pretty much shut down in the winter
for me anyway and very slow to mature, some not laying until they are almost year old.
I feel there is more emphasis on type than egg color and production by the major ABC breeders.
Since most of the APA Ameraucanas are closely related (since all the top breeders swap all the time) I'm wondering where Jeans wheatens came from.
Jean ere they from Barbara Campbell?
Wayne Meridith is suppose to have some great egg shell color but his samples proved other wise.
Kat you better hang on to those wheatens!
Oh and send me some eggs too!

Cottage Rose, you pretty much have nailed my experiences with the ameraucana breed to a tee! But with that said, I still love their pretty appearance and the beautiful blue eggs!
