Hi! I'm new to BYC. I got white leghorn chicks about 4 months ago on April 4th, 2017. I named them Delta and Blue, named after velociraptors (and airlines I guess, my friend pointed that out lol) Now they are just about full grown and laying eggs for about 2 or 3 weeks now. I know that they ARE both hens now! :weeI'm so happy to have these chickens because they are so amazing to own and just watch them play when you are sad or just want to watch them. If you have any suggestions on how to help them to lay bigger eggs, please tell me because right now, the eggs are pretty scrawny. Do they get bigger as the chickens get older, or is it just that they aren't eating enough?

Thank you,

Hi and welcome to BYC :frow Your girls will start small as they figure this whole thing out. You may want to give them some extra protein as starting to lay is an intensive process. Within a few weeks you'll see much larger eggs and next year they will even be larger. Best of luck to you. :old

Hi and welcome to BYC. Assuming your girls are on layers feed, or flock raiser feed with optional oyster shell, there's no need to alter their diet. Their eggs will increase in size soon.

Here’s a link to the Articles section - https://www.backyardchickens.com/articles/ There you’ll find lots of information on almost every aspect of keeping chickens - from coop building ideas, to incubating eggs.

There’s a link on the page above to the Learning Centre - it’s a great resource. If you have a specific topic in mind, just type it in the search box - there's a wealth of information on past and present threads.

Each week, various topics are discussed, which can also be a great resource - https://www.backyardchickens.com/a/topic-of-the-week-thread-archive

You may wish to consider joining your state thread as it will put you in touch with other BYC members in your area - http://www.backyardchickens.com/t/270925/find-your-states-thread#post_3239224

All the best

Chickens are a lot of fun...glad you're finding that out for yourself!

Ok thank you all! I have had an amazing time with my leghorns (though once Blue flew away, but neighbor came to door and told me she saw her, I have her back now, clipped wings) and have had some hilarious experiences. They have "befriended" a cat and now they hang around together, I still monitor for any violent behavior in the cat. Chickens are definetely funny birds. I totally recommend the breed for anyone who is new at chickens.
