I have only been a chicken owner for 9 months and am still learning the ropes but it has been a little obvious for a couple weeks now that our 13 week old Buff Orpington is a cockerel. We even named 'her' Rue. Rue is one of my two Buff Orpington chicks that I purchased from the local grain store in April ('09) I first noticed that s/he was developing quite fast compared to Angel the other buff Orp of the same age. No crowing as of now and very very friendly. For fun I figured I would post pics and let you all guess if Rue is indeed a Roo.

I really have not decided what I will do with him. I kind of like the idea of having a rooster and our neighbors are small distance away (1/4 or more mile?) So I suppose time will tell.

Hmm I wonder when the crowing will start...

A roo is Rue. I so wish I had him here for my girls. I got 12 BO at the farm and home store and figured at the least I would get 1 roo but I have all 12 ladies. I need a good gentle roo for my girls but they are all girls. You are so lucky to have a beautiful gentle roo....

Thank you I figured I would get 2 pullets if I bought just 2. lol He is a sweet heart and I really hope he keeps the gentle disposition. I'm sure I will have lots of rooster questions now. I'm still not sure on the broody hen raising chicks thing (as far as how to go about doing it should the other orp go broody)and at what age he will start being a 'man' and stop being chased by my red star hens.
