Mealworm Farming Question

Update: I took the plunge and went out yesterday to gather everything I need to start raising mealworms for my flock. Ended up buying oatmeal and grinding it up to use as the base because I couldn't find bulk wheat bran without driving 25 miles. Starting with 600 super worms!

DH thinks I can corner the mealworm market when he found out I paid $7 for 100 worms! LOL He said we could turn one of our small out buildings into a mealworm snack shack. I might have created a mealworm maniac! :)

May not appeal to you, but you can use styrofoam instead of wheat bran or oatmeal or whatever (I've used uncracked wheat berries before). I threw some in when I ran out of wheat bran, and they eat it up. Not crazy; just doing what some scientists did.

@HenOnAJuneBug My thought on the Styrofoam is I don't want to feed my chickens worms that have a gut load of styrofoam. I get your point though that it doesn't really matter what kind of grain is used as the substrate....that they will eat it.

Gut microbes in mealworms metabolize styrofoam completely, ie, it no longer exists. It's turned into fuel, carbon dioxide and biodegradable poop.
