Mealworm farming

For what it's worth, I keep mine in the kitchen under the sink. It was babyproofed and I didn't want the cat, dog or kids getting into them. They don't smell and with the noise of the kitchen you can't hear them either. I feed them once or twice a week and peek at them everyday when I get under the sink for dishwasher soap.

I do not, however, feed them fruit because it did smell then. Currently they are eating yellow squash from our garden. Honestly, unless I tell someone, no one knows they are there.

I've put mine in the cabinet over the stove. I don't keep a lot of stuff up there, it stays warm, & no one knows it's there.

Sounds like your mealies settled right in! They don't seem to eat the same all of the time.....I think it depends on the rate of growth and how long it's been since they last had something offered. Sometimes it seems like not much is being consumed.

I have been keeping meal worms for a little over a year. They are thriving, and my chooks love them.

I now have about 1-1.5" of frass at the bottom of each container. I am afraid to clean it out, because I don't want to throw away unhatched eggs. Any suggestions?

And now the carrots are almost gone as well! I split them into two drawers (plastic unit) and it still looks like a living carpet in both drawers. I really didn't expect them to be so lively! My 2 boys are grossed out (yah, the boys are grossed out!) and my DH is patiently indulgent because he knows how happy the chickens make me. But he says I give him plenty to talk about at work!

You could sift the frass out and set it aside. and add more substrate to the container if needed. Keep the frass for several weeks and see if anything starts moving. If so pull it out and set in container.

I am slowly sifting out worms from one of my two older bins. Every time I think I may have them all out the next week I discover a lot more worms!

But I wonder if I will ever get to the bottom of this.
