Thanks for the nudge!!! Corn HUSKS are much different from COBS
My mind isn't the trap it used to be....more like a colander! I still never figured if it was raw or cooked. I didn't try it with the wormiest....any extra corn went to the chickadees. The LOVE cooked corn on the cob.
The only substrate I use is layer pellets since I already buy it for the girls and don't have to figure out a place to store the extra w/o getting unwanted bugs.
I am def going to have to start another bin. Just went through bin number one and got half a bowl of pupae Didnt realize how many there was in there. i just cleaned some out a few days ago.

If this continues to show a difference, I will get some more. I bought 5 lbs from Ebay and just started using it with the new generation of baby wormies. Local stores only carry 50 lb bags and I don't have need/space for it either. Since I can't bring up the tempurature, might as well work on the substrate!
I have used a corn cob with the mealies. When it was new they crawled all ove it and ate the leftover corn. Now it is an old dry hush and the beetles still crawl on it and I have a feeling that they aly some eggs on it. I keep it in the beetle bin. I did try husks(leaves) as well but they just dried up. The worms liked to hide in them but the just seemed messy!!
For substrate I just mix bran(bought from grocery store) with chicken crumbles, ground flax seed, oatmeal and cornmeal. The wormes seem to do well in this mixture. Figure that I hit all bases!!

Hi Everyone! I can't believe how many pages there are to this topic! I don't have time to read them all unfortunately, but I have ready the first several pages, a few in between and the last couple of pages. My question is with the screen that is used for allowing the baby worms to fall into the bin below it, what size of screen is used? I just bought some meal worms off of eBay with the intentions of only feeding them to my girls and not farming them even though I had been reading this thread. But I think I am going to have to tell hubby I am changing my mind! I'll give it a try with the three bin system and if I decide I don't want to maintain it them I'll just let the girls feast on them. Also, what is a good number of meal worms to start with?
i started out with a 1000. now i am fixing to start another bin.
