Mealworm farming

I got mine from petco too. I think I bought 3 containers and about 1/3 were dead. They did replace them. I didn't get NEAR the amount they claimed was in the box. I didn't know that at the time, but I got kinda ripped off. But after about a year and a few months I have MILLIONS.
This is a great example of how in the long run you more than make up for the initial cost. Thanks for sharing.

I worried about my numbers at first, but now I don't worry. I know I will have more than enough mealies when all the beetles do their thing. So I feed out beetles too from time to time when there isn't much to dig up in the yard.

Aewsome! I hope you are speaking from experience and not just expectation, because I am really pumped up now!

I wonder which will come first. My first egg or my first mealworm big enough to feed to the pullets. At this rate, I am guessing the egg. But maybe it would be more fair to see if all 4 pullets start laying first or the mealworms get big enough first. I still bet on the eggs, but we shall see.

Edit to add: boy does waiting stink
Amen. I am in the same place you are on both counts

I just ordered 1000 mealworms from Amy

I'm excited.

With over a year of propagation I would imagine the numbers to be very high.

As for the chickens, we are thinking about moving to FL in June (space coast area). So I only get to enjoy the eggs until then since I am not planning on shipping the chickens. This makes the waiting even worse. But my father-in-law will enjoy them. Once set up there, we might get a couple of hens that are already laying. But it really depends on the local ordinance. I know Merritt Island has changed to allow 4 chickens per 1/2 acre. But the rest of the area pretty much only allows a single chicken. I don't know if 1 chicken would be worth it.

What a lonely life that poor ONE chicken would have! The maximum (if they need to impose such a thing) should be 3. That way if something happens to one of them, you will still have two. These a FLOCK animals, for crying out loud! I suppose the real purpose behind the ruling is NO chickens as (in my opinion) it would be cruel to have just one.

That's quite a move Mavrk! All the way across the country. I don't envy you at all. I'm happy where I'm at!

Yeah, I don't think I would get just one chicken.

Houses here are just too expensive and the state tax has gone up. Coming from Nevada, you understand the temptation of no state tax. I do find myself out near Eureka, NV every so often but I don't think I could live that far from the ocean.
