Mealworm farming

Just placed an order for 2200+ mealworms :) I now need to figure out how much space those guys will take up :) I have a three drawer thing, but will that be big enough for all of them or should I find something bigger?

Plenty big enough. :) I got 5000 from Amy last summer and fed out a bunch. Then I was worried I would have to get more...nope. They reproduce very well. Three drawers will be fine for awhile.

thanks!

yep, i would call or email where you got them, attach the picture if you email and it seems to be a lot of them

That's pretty common for meal worms. Don't worry, the new bugs will eat the dead. If most are like that, though, do ask the store you bought them from. It could be aproblem with diet (not enough food) or a lack of misture or too much direct sunlight, though.

What do you feed them?

I think it looks like a lot because most of the healthy ones had buried themselves in the bran. Pretty much only the black ones left on top.

As for what I fed them I just threw in a few carrots last night. The live worms seem to be loving it. My husband just rolls his eyes when I talk about this but our 2 year old thinks this is the coolest thing in the world. lol I should have bought worms ages ago!

Sounds like a moisture/company problem. Add another carrot piece and pull it out after a few minutes and see if there's a good amount stuck to the veggie.

Hmm.. Mine did not eat the dead ones: I ended up picking them out and feeding them to the Chix. I was lucky and did not have very many though.

Today I sifted out my beetles and have new little wormies!

I can barely see the substrate rolling. I really need to cut out the bottom of my beetle drawer and replace it with screen to make the seperation less time consuming. Just too busy/lazy to go get the screen.
