Mealworm farming

my worms are so weird...they seem to like to pile up and wiggle around on each other... Is that normal?

Boy they sure do love carrots I have found!

Please remind me...when can I start feeding these to my chicks?

Everyone's opinions are different on it, I start mine on them around 2 weeks old, but make sure they have chick grit, or a small bowl of dirt from outside. They need the grit to help digest the worms.

I have lost a chick to a mealworm which came out the top of its head (YEAUCH!). Don't know the mechanics of it, but it sure made me size mealies for chicks MUCH more carefully, or feed dead worms only. (I kill mine either by freezing or by nipping the head off with a thumbnail.) Pupae are another good way to ensure that no harm comes to your chicklets, especially the very small like Seramas.

oh, that is just nasty!

Ca some one help me???

How do you know if you have mites in with your worms>???

Can you see them?

Also if you do have mites can they transfer to your chickens?

grain mites only get into the grain, as far as I know. they are really tiny, it will look like a moving white or grey "mass" running up the side of the bin.

Got our very first beetle!!!!!!!!! You know the way a lot of you talked I thought they'd be gross beetles but they're really rather adorable beetles. Of course I might be absurdly fond of my mealies now.
