Mealworm farming

Pics
When you start this meal worm farming, the best thing is not to over think it. These are tough insects. So this is what I do. Use 1 large plastic bin. Throw in your crumbled chicken feed, oatmeal, bran(start with wheat germ from the kmart)and carrots or celery. Not to much greenstuff. You want it to disappear rather quickly. You don't want mold. Next add mealworms. They will level mix, burrow under things and make themselves at home. Now watch you worm and enjoy. They will do their thing without you. If you start with a simple system it is much less intense. Later as time goes on you can experiment with your bin . Worm farming is fun and addictive.
On that note, my husband was disgusted with my determination to worm farm. He tolerated my obsession but certainly didn't encourage it!! So as the worms pupatedI began a beetle bin to see what would happen. Every morning I would hunt for pupa, put them in the beetle bin and watch. Then one am my husband got up before me and I found HIM hunting in MY bin. This am he got up first and when I came into the kitchen(yes, they live in my kitchen on my counter) he proudly announced "I found 115 pupae this morning!!!". Give your family time to acclimate.
I use paper towel cardboard rolls to collect the worms. They seem to like crawling into the tubes. It is easy to upend the rolls and collect the worms into a container to gut load.
I bought 10,000 worms 2 weeks ago for around $100. They are more robust than those from the pet store and finally I was able to feed a decent meal of worms to my girls. I'm careful about the numbers that I feed since i want to have plenty through the year. I want to have a self-sustaining farm like some on here.
Gotta run now. Going to walmart to buy another bin. My husband was giving me advice about buying another bin to begin another colony. This from the man who told me not to be rediculous just a few monthe ago!! Have fun,Lynn

Have any of yall tried the mealworm farming? I have been looking into doing it. A guy contacted me a few weeks ago watching to trade 2000 meal worms and a few Beatles for a 10 gallon tank that i have. Is the upkeep hard? People make it look easy. I have printed out some info on them and looking into getting a colony set up. My girls love love love meal worms. Just wanted some info on it. Ive seen the pics of you guys colony's. They are neat looking. People will deff think ive gone off the deep end when they find out ive got a meal worm colony .

Can you guys provide some reasonable meal worm suppliers? I have tried grubco, wormman, and rainbow...they are either out of stock, or it's toomhot to ship w guarantee or their site doesn't work...

Hunter-easy peasy Read entry 562!! A few general rules-Don't let them get cold, Don't let them get wet, Don't let them get hungry. You know, like your kids!!! 2,000 worm is not enough!! You would be surprised how quickly you go through them. But to get 2,000 worms practically free-no brainer. Go for it.
Cielo and hannahcat are the brains behind this movement. I'm just following orders!!
Yeah Cielo, you should see him now!! Colorado already has the Mattress King and the Car King(John Elway) now my husband will be the Mealworm King!!! Too Funny

Klwright, go to exoticnutrition.com. I got 10,000 medium mealworms for around $100.00. Maybe a little more expnsive that most but you should see these worms. Robust, hungry, active and they pupate into thse big, fat rolly-polly guys. I was VERY happy with the product and will use them again if I ever need more worms. Lynn

Ok I have ordered some worms...now I am curious about the bin. I am not going to buy a 50# bag of anything cuz I know it'll get bugs before I use it all...but I do have chick starter and I guess I could by oatmeal...
What else can u suggest that is reasonable in cost. I am onlyndoing one bin to start and see how I do..so I don't think I need anything in bulk..
And what is this zapping or microwaving of bin material about? Do I do it for the chicken feed and oatmeal as well?

OK so don't go overboard with the feed. By a jar or two of wheat germ from walmart, use some chicken crumbles(by a small bag of chick starter if you have to) and get a box of generic oatmeal from walmart as well. That should tied you over for some time.
I use a 25 qt Sterlite bin from walmart and that was large enough for my 10,000 worms!! Voile, you have a worm farm. Don't froget to add a cardboard roll from paper towels for entertainment for you and the worms. You are in business!!!

Welcome Klwright1122! and congrats!!! I use the store brand oatmeal in the single bin. You can add other wheat products to it, but for me the oatmeal was easy and cheap. In the 3-drawer colony, my second drawer has ground up oats, corn meal, dry milk, chicken feed and also wheat flour. It's been easy to watch the wee worms develop in it since it's so fine.

OwensMom ~ Love the DH story! It's great when everyone comes to

the farm! Mine knows better than to touch mine but also knows to come 'lookie' when I call in excitement over just about everything wormie.

Zapping the feed is only if you get mites, which hopefully, you won't. Mites don't come FROM the feed but if they invade then they breed in the feed.

For ventilation in my big single bin, we cut out sections and hot glued screening material in. It really helps to avoid mold on fruits/veggies.

Oh, and yes, the 3-drawer beetle drawer has paper, egg carton sections, and toilet paper rolls. Only the best!

Just get a carton of cheap store brand 1 minute oats. I have never heard of microwaving or zapping the bedding first but maybe it's one of those posts I missed. Edit: Ok now I see what that's about. mites.
