Mealworm farming

Just dump the frass into your compost pile with everything else, or you can spread it around in your gardens. It's not "hot" like chicken poop. It's neutral like rabbit poop. It won't "burn" your plants but will just dissolve into the soil and get used up by the plants.

Hi All, son was feeding and cleaning today, and collecting beetles and mealies and he had a question.

THe bran is replaced by very fine round beads.... I assume frass..... correct me if need be...... how to remove some of this....

Worth the loss of some eggs and tiny larves?? An can it be used to fertilize in the garden???? Suggstions?? It is about 75% of the material in 3 bins.
I would separate the frassy stuff from the the mealworms and the rest of the bedding by sifting it through some window screen (24''x12'' costs $0.61 at my store). Then let the frass/egg/ baby mealies sit till the majority of the mealworms are big enough to not fall through the screen, then re-sift the frass/small beetle mix, and throw out the pure frass or use it however you want.

I tried giving frass to my cactus but it just made a moldy spot in the soil.

I have just started my first batch of mealworms. They're 200grams on chicken starter feed and potatoes. I'm now an official farm girl! Yippee!

I bought 500 mealies last week and found this site! After reading so much on here I went ahead and ordered 5000 more lol Just a little excited to start my farm! One of my teen DD's has been raising snakes, a leopard Gecko and a bearded dragon so it just made sence for me to raise mealworms for my birds and she is raising crickets, mealworms for her critters. I am a beekeeper with a large apiary and just love bugs! LOL I am useing a 7 bin tower. My DD is doing a 1 bin set up so we will compare our reults to see works better lol I am useing oats, chick feed and cornmeal. That is what I had on hand but after reading this thread, I am switching to wheat bran, oats and chickstarter baked in the oven, I dont own a microwave. I only have one bin drawer wih worms so I can switch out and start with mite free substrate I hope! I am feeding carrots, apples and spuds. Right now my 500 are in a bin drawer on my incubater staying warm.(after reading about it on here! Thanks for the advice!) I found 3 pupa today! I shhuld get the other 5000 on Friday or Monday!! Thanks everyone fkr providing such a wealyh of adivice and information here, it has helped me so much! I am off to finish reading the rest of this thread now

Are there beetles in that bin? could be eggs/small larvae.

Did anybody else get PM spam from a user named "daisywang" selling dried mealworms from China?

Seriously, that crap from China IS exactly the reason why I breed (and sell) my own mealworms, because I want some healthy treats for my chickens and nothing loaded with chemicals like so many other pet foods from China.

wow, bet nifty would want to know about that spam.

Thanks everyone for the input. Will try removing all the beetles into a new bin and let the eggs/larve mature, then use the frass in the garden.

THANK YOU FOR THE SUGESTIONS!!!

Yeah, I looked up that user, it says there have been 4 forum posts but there are no longer any posts by that user, so probably deleted... probably an account made just to spam.

Hey y'all! What is a good source to buy meal worms from? I've decided to jump on the bandwagon and raise these for my birds as a feed supplement to help with their protein intake.

Blessings -
