We have our first beetles YAY! Our worms are humongous. I'm hoping with them being a little apart we'll be able to have some in different stages. It seems they grow fast. I seperated out some of the larvae and beetles to their own bin and I guess I'll try this newspaper thing

I would suggest a few more bigger holes. They will put off more moisture than you think and it could mold you bran. It is kinda like with chickens, you can never have TOO much ventilation.

Has anyone done any testing to see what the best food for them is? What I mean is what ratio of say carrot to spinach to strawberry will provide the highest amount of digestible nutrition for chickens. Do breeders compared to layers or chicks need a mealie with different food stuff in them? I am trying to go off all store bought feed to only mealies and fodder and what's in season. Has anyone had any luck dehydrating veggies and then re-hydrating them for the mealies later in the year? Do they eat them?

not sure to tell you the truth, what size holes would be good- my DD want to make sure that they don't ecaspe because she thinks they are this

I have a solder pen, that makes perfect sized holes in my opinion. You can then stuff the holes with a bit of fiber fill or batting. That allows some air flow, the fibers will act as wick of sorts, and pull the wet out of the container, while helping to block bad bugs from getting in. This is what I did for confused flour beetles when I raised them for my bettas, and contrary to what most sites said, THOSE things DO fly, and ended up ruining a number dry goods in my pantry, including dry cake mix.

does anyone feed the beetles to their chickens or just the worms?
