Mealworm farming

Well my first try at a mealworm farm was a bust. Hubbie left the top off and lizards got to them

It was only $3 investment so I'm not too bothered by it. My next step will be to order a kit and not get any from the pet store like I had done.

I bet they were some very happy lizards :) I've made that mistake with my chickens.

I have ordered a kit from bnewns and I can't wait! My oldest son (13) is totally grossed out by the idea, but my daughter (11) is excited about it. Go figure! I have my bins ready to go!

I got a meal worm kit on the way & so far I can't find any wheat bran. I seen on another web site & it said you can use chick crumbles.
Has any body used crumbles before?
I just got my chicks last week & I got a 50lb bag of medicated crumbles.

Thanks
Jeff

My understanding is that rolled oats work as well - do you have a health food store near - if so try there - that is where I am getting wheat bran. I was told that the chick crumble is too heavy and they cannot get around in it - I ask about chick mash and was told same thing - too heavy for them.

Quote: rolled oats works good as a food source, but its too hard to sift out the worms and beetles. I got I 40 lb bag from the feed store and they also sell it by the pound. If you can't find it I can try vacuum sealing it and shipping it out to you in its condense form

just thinking you could use the chick crumble and oats if you grind it up. YOu can also add some corn meal, but it shouldn't be a part of their diet if you are not feeding corn to the chickens.

I'm gearing up for winter too.!
