I am especially proud of your efforts and resourcefulness. I told you this thread would be a hit...nice post! You've got me convinced to start my own mealworm farm as well. Let's keep in touch on our progress. I think I'll make my order for a "starter kit" tomorrow! I like the drawer method of the eggs dropping down to the lower bins. I'll query You-Tube as well...let's make them chicks and chickens happy!!!

Forgot to tell you that I bought the worms online from Uncle Jims Worm Farm (DO NOT ORDER FROM UNCLE JIMS). They sent the wrong worms the first time and communication was really poor but I did get the correct worms (and I believe there were more than 1000, but I didn't actually count em!!!)

ETA: There have been so many problems with orders from Uncle Jims. Please order from one of those listed on the first post of this thread or Ebay or ANYWHERE else.

I've been doing this, the thing with the 3 drawers and screen on the bottom of one, for a couple months now. It's so easy, it makes you wonder why more people don't do it. The screening you use is just window screen hotglued to the cutout bottom of the top drawer. They love veggies! I kept reading to feed them oatmeal and bran and so forth, but mine really thrive when I drop in some greens. They look all lethargic when they have none, but with a cabbage leaf or just about any green left over in there, they get really energetic looking lol.

I've been giving the first of my harvest to baby chicks and ooohhh boy do they do nuts!

Here's a picture of the screen. I bought a roll of it at the local Lowe's and cut out the size I needed. Hubby cut the bottom of the drawer out for me leaving about 1" all around but you don't need to leave that much. Hot glue works great to secure it.

It's soooo much fun!

galanie ~ yes, you need to keep some form of moisture in there at all times. They get their only moisture from the fruit or veggie you provide. Mine seem to go through it quickly so I keep a variety (again, I'm nutty). Hey, as long as they're growing and morphing into pupa....I'm a happy camper...oh wait....mealworm farmer!!!

New title! I might not have enough chickens to be a chicken farmer, and having dogs and cats doesn't mean I'm a farmer of anything (poop remover) but now I can honestly say I'm a worm farmer. Hah! It didn't dawn on me when I made the tread...
