Mealworm farming

I am not quite sure how I got mites.
It was in the bin (plastic storage bin) that sat right in front of the sliding glass door that we use the most often. No curtain up then and very warm there.
I first noticed them when my DD brought home a seed kit to grow Forget Me Nots. She sat the little kit on the same table and I soon saw little white critters all over. But the humidity is high here with storms every day and that door opening so often let in a lot of humidity so maybe they were always there and just exploded when the environment was right.

My other 2 bins are on 2 other tables and they did not get them but they are closer to the corner and in a darker area. I tried to make a new bin with the wormies that were left and some beetles from the mite infested bin but there were so many pupae and I figured the mites were already on the pupae, beetles and wormies so I just put the worms and beetles in it and let them have newspaper and some carrots. I made that bin very dark in the corner. The pupae are still in my first bin and I am hoping now that I moved their table and put my heavy curtains back up that the mites will die back. As of right now the mites are still all over the walls of the bin and I have more dead beetles in there than anywhere. I thought I got all the beetles out but I just lifted a paper and there were about 40 under it eating on a carrot along with a few wormies I missed.

And maybe this is a stupid question, but I'm going to ask it anyway. You can't use DE to treat the mites cuz it will kill the meal worms and beetles too, right?

Yes, I am pretty sure the diatoms in the DE would rip open the pupae, mealies and soft spots on the beetles. I would not try it. they are all bugs, after all.

And there are no stupid questions.

Yea, that's what I was thinking. But you certainly could make a barrier of DE around the outside of your meal worm farm. That would prevent them from crawling back in.

Did you guys have many dead mealworms in the container when you got them?
I probably lost about 100 out of 1000 before they even entered my container.
And that's the ones that I saw. There's probably more.

I had a couple of dead ones. Did you buy them locally or order them through the mail?

Either way, starting out 900 is quite a few and should get you off to a great start.

I think I started with 400. I bought 500 but kept giving them to the hens.

I had to buy them locally. D:
But yeah, and they're very hungry. They're chewing huge holes through the potato.
I can't stop checking on them.

I know. It's fun to watch. Like an ant farm. I had mine in the house for several days. Till my DH said it had to go outside. The cold of the garage definitely slows the whole process down. Something to keep in mind. Good for making them last longer. But I think I'll bring mine back in this winter to keep it moving. Someone suggested storing it next to the vacuum cleaner. And indeed, DH will never find it there.

I might end up taking mine outside soon, they're in my room on my dresser currently.
Hahahaha, vacuuming isn't his cup of tea, eh?

I bought 10,000 mealworms this spring to feed Mountain Bluebirds and my chickens. I bought the giants so supposedly they are sterile. I have several darkling beetles from the giants so I'll wait and see if I get baby worms. I'm a girl (40 something) and I like to play with worms!!

We also raise composting worms for fishing and of course the poop!!
