Mealworm farming

WOW, I have been reading ALL day about mealworms & I decided to give it a shot! Don't seem hard and I already have one of those 3 drawer plastic bins. So now all I have to do is order some mealworms. I found somebody on ebay from PA that is selling 1000 for $14.50 total. They have good feedback too. So excited to do this! I still have to re-read some things because I may be a little confused about how & when to move them?

Hannakat where are you in Beaver County? I'm also in Beaver county in Ellwood City

Thanks! That explains it much better!!! I'm only on page 23 of this thread so I still have alot of reading to do. I have Bantams so should I order the small or medium mealies? Does anybody have them for sale here or should I just go with the ebay one thats 1000 for $14.50 shipped? Thanks!

Hi neighbor!! I'm in Brighton Twp.

I have a mealworm page for info (link in my signature line), as does Gallo del Cielo. WestKnollAmy has a website with an awesome mealworm page as well.

It's not really that hard. As the worms pupate, move the pupae to a new bin. Those pupae will morph into beetles and the beetles will lay eggs. Several weeks later you will will get to see baby mealies if you look close. A few weeks after that, the worms will be bigger and easier to see. Once fully developed, they pupate and the process starts all over.

There are some that clean out their bin once a year...others more often. It's all a matter of choice. They will develop and thrive no matter.

Hope you can find all the answers you need...if not, keep asking! There's a bunch of farmers here with a load of information.

Remember, it's only as complicated as you want it to be. Plenty people do great just having them all together in one aquarium or something and letting them do their thing. You only get into the screen wire/drawer method or separating the pupae from the others if you want to have them "sorted" already. Glad to see so many new folks joining us! Go Go Go mealies!!!
