Mealworm farming

My colonies are starting to take off again too. When I put them in the new "high rise apt" I split my already small colony into two, so it had a set back for a few weeks. I am going to split each bin one more time so I will have 4 total to fill the "high rise" but I won't split them again for a few more weeks.

My colonies still aren't big enough to feed out, but I really should go through and get out the dead beetles, I thought they would "take care" of the dead beetles better then they have, my plan was to let the live ones do away w/ the dead, but so far that plan hasn't worked.

Sad to report that I DID NOT get little wormies for Christmas like so many of you...

The beetles are a lot more active since I brought them out of the back room and set them by the heating duct though! Tomorrow I am going to get some fresh wheat bran for them and make their substrate deeper. Maybe that will help. Terri O

I know, I know!! I spent Christmas morning going through and found myself TALKING to the darn things..."Hey there, you're looking good, how ya doin', ooh-ick, you aren't looking at ALL good, black just isn't your color..."

I give up! It's terminal, I swear!

Always fun to see what's gonna happen next... !

First....I like your idea of counting out 100 and x10. fyi though... 1 cup of worms equals 1000 full grown mealies so if there are smaller mealies, the count is a bit higher, which is okay cause most of us who do or have sold them tend to give 10% extra just because.....

About dead beetles, after a little while, usually all that's left are the wings and the skeleton of the head. Just make sure that if you're picking out dead beetles to only pick out the ones whose legs are missing. If it still has it's leg there is a chance it's just in a deep sleep, which they seem to do now and then.
