X2. I feed dead beetles as well.

It's the mold I'd be concerned about, if anything - but the birds got into a bale of very moldy straw a year or two ago, and had no noticeable ill effects. Still, I wouldn't recommend feeding moldy food.

But I live them all.

We do have some chickens that run around the neighborhood, I could test them on them. hehe

The way we do our mealworms is we gutload them for about 3 days when they arrive. This entails grinding layena with a little bit of dry milk in a container. I dump the bag in there and feed them for the 3 days. After that I sift them and put them in layers of paper towels into tupperware containers. I store them in the fridge and they last for quite a while.

I started my mealworm farm today. I picked up 200 mealworms from Petco and I have them in an old field green container with oats and a couple chunks of carrot for their water needs. I'm off to a good start. We'll see how it all goes.

Awesome. I started w/ just a few like that too. It just takes a generation or two to catch up. My colony isn't big enough yet for me to feed out, but I have 20 chickens to feed. But I started out w/ just under 200 and now have 2 bins. I'm about to divide them into 4 bins and let them fill those, then I will start harvesting them.

If the mold was just on the potato, just take out the potato and then throw the bin to the birds. Shouldn't hurt them one bit.

ETA: Forgot to say this is directed towards wolftracks' question about the mold in the mealie bin.

Okay, I`m thinking on doing it, but.... I got told keep up with it is hard work, that ordering 100+ is so much eaiser.... True or false?

I have 10,000 large Mealworms and it takes 2-3 minutes twice a week to take the old veggies out and replace with fresh. They are very simple things to raise!

Which is what I thought, But my friend says they are to much work. What kind of set up do you have?
