I am sorry if this has already been asked, but I don't have time to go through all the pages but if you could raise enough worms to freeze could they be given as a substitution for feed or are they simply a snack. What would be the best way to feed them in the winter to cut down on feed bills?

I don't think that it would be healthy for your birds to feed them solely meal worms. There is a lot more that chickens need than just protein. They are meant to be a snack, and good in the winter, when there aren't any bugs (and thus, no protein). I am going to raise mine all summer and feed them as snacks in the winter.

Someone jump in and tell me if I am wrong!

X2 for sure!

And about the aluminum pans..... I would be afraid they could climb out of there because the sides arent totally smooth. Those tiny little legs could wrap around the folds of aluminum and climb right out.

Aluminum pans...I thought about that, too, but then I thought about the noise....Shades of Alien....eeek, eeek, eeeeekkk.....

Yeah, I wouldn't give them just mealworms - they need much more, mealworms can't give them everything they will need, but they sure are a healthy snack! My chickens go nuts over 'em, my 5 girls can down 50 in just 10 seconds!

My new Mealworm Farm...started today with a tub of 250 "fishbait" mealies...lol My son is fascinated, in case you couldn't tell

I finally had to stash them in an empty dresser drawer to get him to stop playing with them...lol
