Mealworm farming

make sure you do freeze, or dry cook what you are feeding yoru mealworms! learned the hard way ended up with grain mites and had to dump all my worms :( I do oatmeal in the oven on 200 for 20-25 min

Got my 1000 last week from Amy at West Knoll Farm. Despite the post office taking an extra day, they were packed so well that there were only a few DOAs that might have been gone already for all I know (she packs more than the 1000 order for these reasons). I liked that there was a little fruit and bread for them to eat and get moisture. The bag was a nice touch too. I can't believe how fast they eat.

One little "trick" I did was to put the top of an egg crate upside down in the mealworm bin. then I put the food on top of that. The holes in the middle allow the worms to come in, and the shape keeps the food in. It was weird seeing the food moving towards the edge as the mealworms got to it. Hoping to have some beetles in a couple weeks. They sure shed fast.

Yup. Plus 1 on mealworms from Amy at West Knoll Farm. I got mine awhile back and now they are so plump and healthy. Getting a lot of beetles and pupaes. Will post pictures later (if I remember). Quick question - can I feed mealies pumpkins? Haven't try it myself because I'm afraid something bad might happen.

Glad they arrived okay and still had some food left. I try to ensure that you receive really great "breeders"! LOL

You will have beetles before you know it! Happy farming!

Lol. Yeah, like I said there were maybe 4 or 5 dead mealworms and 1 dead beetle. So the packing you do is very well thought out. Now I just have to resist feeding them to my pullets

Am so pleased, all my bins are teeming with babies! some are big enough to feed out, and i still have thriving beetles!!! will post pics very soon!
