I was checking out online about buying mealworms, my pet store charges $3 a dozen, on line I found them $20 for 2000 - anyone have experience buying mealworms on line? Also, don't they need to be refrigerated, and they 'come back to life' when you shake them around a bit?

I've never tried but would be totally willing to give it a shot. What's the URL for the place you found (or the google terms I can use to find it)?

I always order crickets online. Shipping is a bit, but it is still cheaper than getting them in a pet store.

I've ordered from Rainbow Mealworms online before, with decent results though the shipping was $$$... but someone recently called me attention to ebay, don't know why I didn't think about it before- there are some sellers with good ratings and much cheaper shipping... next time!!!

I have bought some mealworms from the Wormman before, and I had my great little setup, to make more mealworms. They came in just fine even not refrigerated. I was feeding bearded dragons, sugar gliders, and my cat loved them too. (yes, I know, weird cat!).

From what I know about them, check each supplier carefully, make sure to read the shipping FAQS on each supplier's site, and over all, do what you would do to get anything live. Double check what is said on the site with what you get.

Also you don't need to shake them around a bit. Just pull out their little container and let them warm up a bit. They go dormant when temps go low, so they just need to warm up a little before becoming active.
Hope this helps, M.

If you have a WalMart in your area try their sporting/fishing department as resource. We are in Northern California and we get them for $1.36 for 25 giant worms. At least you don't have to pay shipping.

I got my mealworms on ebay. I got 5000 for about 50 with the shipping. Worms are doing great growing and I hope they will turn into beetles soon
