Mean Barred Rock Chick!!!

Quote:
Hi,
I had to find a home for a mean chick today! She was pecking the eyes and head of one chick in particular, but also another. I think if I could have made it work until they were all fully feathered it would have been okay because they were okay in the coop today. In the brooder she turns really mean and anytime the two smaller chicks would move she would charge over and peck repeatedly at them even if they were still and cowering. We found her a good home, and picked up an americauna chick and now there is happiness in my flock!

I started out with BRs and RIRs and still keep both. I have never had a problem with them being overly aggressive. In fact, they are if anything too friendly sometimes, like when we're trying to clean out the coop and they consistently want to "help", or when we go out to catch one of the horses and they just have to know what's going on and try to be the center of attention. All except one of them loves to be held, and the friendliest one will come climb in your lap if you're sitting out in the lawn chair. I have lots of breeds now and these are still my favorite (well, them and my Old Dutch bantams).

Since you just received them I'll presume that they are just a day or so old which in my opinion it's still a baby trying to figure out if the others are same as the picker and or if there's something funny looking to the one BR on the others faces then it'll pick at them. I don't think that it's trying to establish a pecking order already although it could be and can't say for sure unless I watch them myself.

I've heard that chickens are a year old when one week old and after raising my 40 some I personally think that they are like most all other baby animals just trying to have a good time so it could be trying to really get their attention and they're not giving it out of fear from being in the box during shipping and not knowing what's going on around them. Since you just received them today, I would leave them together and just keep an eye on them, they are babies and will perform as such.

Speaking of, I have a 10 month old that still to this day comes whining to me when he's being picked on by my other roo! They are a lot like kids and some take them to serious while forgetting that they are again, newborns!
