I have a very mean button quail. Every time I put my hand in the cage to change the water, feed , Clean or take out the eggs. he charges after my hand and grabs hold of my finger, once he has hold of my finger he wont let it go. There is only 2 quail in the cage him and my hen who is nice as can be, He is not mean towards the hen at all, they get along just fine its only hands that he attacks as a matter of fact all you have to do is walk over to the cage and he charges at you. Its crazy I dont know what to do with him. How can I get this quail to stop the biting and charging at us?
Any help would be great.
thanks
Kathy

Hi Kathy,
I've had up to 80 Button Quail at once and half of those Male. I've never had one attack. That's a strange one to me anyway.
I guess you could try a spray bottle of water. Put your hand up to the cage and spritz him if he went to grab your finger.
He might get the idea that this is not acceptable and he has consequences if he does that. That's just a guess...
I have males take food from my fingers. Bits of apple, meal worms, lettuce. Then they offer them to their mate.

Good luck with him,
David

invite him for dinner!

In the wild he would be fighting for his mate / property / stature. I have a male who does that but he's the only one out of the hundreds of buttons I have / had. He does not bother the hen so I just let him be. Quick feedings and quick clean ups. If figure if it's just me and not the mate he is probably just protecting their home?.... I don't know if you can get it trained out of it or not? Maybe feed it meal worms by hand so it trust you? Not sure how you can change that. I don't mind my male doing it because he hasn't hurt anyone and I'm not looking for a pat out of him.

Thanks for the replys I just moved the cage higher off the floor, out of reach of my grandson, he likes to get close to the cages and talk to the birds. Cant have the roo charging my 2 year old grandson.
I will try the spray bottle when I have to do stuff with the cage, will also try the mealworms something has to work, I just dont understand this quail I have 5 quail in all and this is the only one that is nasty.
