We have six hens that are two years old. We purchased six more chicks from rural king at Easter. We got three more light brahmas and silver laced Wyandottes. Our older chickens are tame. These six new babies are not! They will not let us handle them, and never have been receptive to us holding them. Getting them into the coop at night is a nightmare. They get so stressed. We haven't clipped wings because we can barely catch them. And when we do get them, they scratch and peck. I've tried treats, remaining calm. Everything. Please help. I hate seeing them so fearful of us and I feel like it makes it hard to care for them.

Some chickens just aren't as social as others. I've trained some pretty terrified/mean ones to at least tolerate my presence, though - they may not want to be held but if they at least associate you with food and treats it'll make life easier.

If you have the time, the easiest way is to just sit with them. I've sat for hours with chicks, just reading a book. I'll ignore them and let them get used to me on their own time, with treats sprinkled around. They don't have to worry about me making noises or trying to get them - I'm just sitting there being a big ol' non threat. They come around...later you can try treats and petting if they're ok with it, if not they'll at least see you and think "ah, treats"!
Worth a shot :)

Most of mine r not warm & fuzzy with me, but when I go in & sit with them, they r very curious & will get really close & even lightly peck me. I am working with them so I can pick them up to check them. Sitting in the coop really does seem to work.
